Campus Champion

Sam Avery was in high school when he attended his first film festival and watched one of his own creations. After that, making movies wasn’t enough. He wanted to start his own festival. Fast forward through college, grad school, teaching and several films: Sam, assistant professor of communication studies, will launch his fourth and largest Blackbird Film Festival at SUNY Cortland this weekend. Since it began, Sam has struck a balance of collaboration between experienced professionals and first-time filmmakers, including students. Blackbird, at Cortland for its second year, is currently giving 30 Cortland interns real-world learning experiences.
