Laptop Circulation and Liability Policy

This policy outlines the procedures for SUNY Cortland students who are eligible to borrow laptops from Memorial Library.  Students who require a laptop for an extended period throughout the semester, please submit a request use the Long Term Laptop loan request form, available through Information Resources.  For details about Computer Labs in Memorial Library, see the Library Resources guide.  Users are expected to be self-directed in their use of the laptops and must abide by SUNY Cortland's Network Use Policy.

Eligibility

Laptops can be checked out only by SUNY Cortland students with a current SUNY Cortland identification card, who maintain a valid library account in good standing, and who read, agree to, and sign the Library Laptop Loan Agreement. The user's ID card must be presented to the circulation staff each time a laptop is borrowed. The Library Laptop Loan Agreement must be read and signed at the beginning of the academic year. Under no circumstance will a user be allowed to check out a laptop for another person.

Loan Periods and Availability

Laptops may be checked out at the Library Circulation Desk during library hours. Laptops are to be used in the library only. One laptop per user will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis. The loan period for a laptop is three (3) hours. One renewal is permitted.

Fines and Liability

The overdue fine for a laptop is $6.00 per hour or any part of an hour thereafter. The user that checks out the laptop is held financially responsible for damage to, loss of, or theft of the laptop. The replacement cost of a damaged, lost or stolen laptop is $1600.00 plus the accrued overdue fines. The person who checks out the laptop must read, agree to, and sign the Library Laptop Loan Agreement and is responsible for its safe return in good condition. Laptops should never be left unattended. Memorial Library assumes no responsibility if the laptop is stolen while checked out to a user.

Limitations on Use

Upon return, all laptops will be subject to a maintenance review by a library computer specialist to ensure proper working order. Users must not tamper with the hardware or software already installed on the laptop.  The laptops are to be used for research purposes and preparation of class assignments and projects only.
