To the Red Dragon Student-Athletes and Athletics Community:
Although it's been a week since the unthinkable news came out that our athletic seasons have abruptly ended, the shock still resonates.
We must comprehend that the decisions that were made by the NCAA and our university were done to help combat a global public health crisis. But it still hurts knowing that everyone who worked so hard to compete at the highest levels won't have the chance to enjoy the fruits of their labor. I am grateful, however, to see how our student-athletes and coaches have handled this situation with poise and class.
As a former Cortland student-athlete who has been part of this community for more than 30 years, I totally understand the role athletics plays in your lives – whether you are athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, other support staff, or fans. The life lessons learned from being involved with collegiate athletics – leadership, responsibility, discipline, sacrifice and teamwork – will help guide you through this difficult stretch, and in the rest of your lives, even if you never again put on a Cortland uniform.
My heart especially goes out to the seniors who had their spring seasons cut short and don't plan on returning next year to use the extra year of eligibility the NCAA has granted to all spring athletes. We will still have many opportunities to be together in the future, be it at athletic events, Alumni Reunion, or team-specific gatherings. You will always be a part of the rich tradition and history here at Cortland.
I wish you the best as we navigate these unchartered waters, and I eagerly anticipate the day when Cortland athletes, and the nation, return to the playing fields and arenas. There has been no time like the present where the Cortland Athletics motto – "One Team, One Family" – rings more true. Please remain strong, and don't hesitate to let us know how we can help you moving forward.
Sincerely,
Mike Urtz '94
Director of Athletics
