This course is offered to Interior Design students working for three weeks either in an international design office or classroom environment. Students are exposed to strategic planning methods of design and their impact on local redevelopment, and are introduced to the process of critical evaluation of existing city and neighborhood resources, which will support their proposals for an interior design group project. Guatemala: Guatemala FLP - Water and the Environment of Guatemala
Water and the Environment of Guatemala is an international field course that prepares students to find solutions to contemporary water resources issues in the developing world. Students will take water samples and analyze water quality data from Lake Atitlán and the surrounding watershed. Based on observations, interactions with residents, and data collection, students will identify sustainable solutions to local water resources problems. Students will also be exposed to Guatemala's natural systems, from volcanoes and climate to soils and biomes as they relate to water.

Iceland: Iceland: Renewable Energy, Technology, and Resources Economics (SIT)
For this program, students will explore multiple aspects of the renewable energy landscape in Iceland, from meeting with various stakeholders in the renewable energy sector, to visiting the different sites where the renewable energy itself is produced. Simultaneously, students will be able to explore all of the beauty and wonders of the Icelandic landscape.
SUNY students can participate through Binghamton, which is slightly more affordable than going directly through SIT. However, it is not mandatory for other SUNY students to go through Binghamton. Students should apply through Binghamton simultaneously with SIT. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis but are due no later than March 1. Early application is strongly recommended as this program is popular and tends to book up quickly

Iceland: Iceland: Climate Change in the Arctic (Binghamton University)
This program is very excursion based, with consistent trips being a part of the itinerary. It is also particularly research-based. Students complete a 6-credit research project which is at the center of their experience. Students also receive formal instruction on topics related to climate change, as well as have the opportunity to meet and discuss climate models and carbon management from experts. Students will get to conduct fieldwork of their own, informed by SIT's Research Methods and Ethics in the Arctic course.

Recognized as a City of Peace, students will explore local culture, enjoy multi-ethnic culinary experience while attending a series of lectures on topics related to Sustainable Future through Renewable Energy. Renewable sources could play a vital role in achieving manageable atmospheric CO 2 levels by 2035. This course, jointly taught by local faculty, explores types of renewables that can feasibly and sustainably replace fossil fuels. Students will also participate in a special experiential learning excursion to the Himalayas where renewable energy is starting to get interwoven into the society. Students have the opportunity to be considered for a paid internship placement.

Global Design Engineering Innovation (EAS 310)
Change lives this summer with your creative solutions to real problems for real people in Kenya! This program is designed for students who have an interest in innovative designs and engineering geared toward the developing world. Using the Turkana Basin Institute as the base for their fieldwork, students will work in interdisciplinary teams and try to make a positive global and local impact through fieldwork and case studies.
The courses will also introduce students to the main principles of engineering and discuss the details of providing a standard of living that is adequate for human settlement in developing countries. The discussions will be based on the social, geo-political, and infrastructural elements in Ileret, Kenya. Students will be exposed to a comparison between the resources available in developed countries and those available in rural areas and/or areas of limited resources. Understanding such differences will help prepare our students for future challenges at a global scale.

Norway: Politics and Practices of Climate Change (SUNY Purchase)
Norway is an ideal location for learning about climate change and sustainability. The country was named the European Green Capital in 2019 by the European Commission and is renowned for its environmental policies, strong focus on renewable-energy production, and comprehensive environmental regulatory system.
This 6-week summer course combines synchronous and asynchronous learning in the U.S. with hands-on experiential learning in Norway. Narrowing in on the fundamental impact of globalization and the global economy on climate change, the course will explore social and ecological theory that resituates the political economy of ecology within social relations and institutions, cultural values, and the politics of power. Using a comparative approach, students apply accumulated knowledge to working definitions of climate change and identify real-world challenges to sustainability in diverse local environments.
Students live together at a centrally located youth hostel in Oslo. Through classroom lectures, discussions, and excursions, students will not only learn about environmental issues affecting Norway, but their own communities as well. Field trips include places such as a waste processing and heating plants, government buildings, libraries, museums, and other green and ecology focused sites.

Stony Brook University offers students the opportunity to experience the cultural environment of northern Tanzania on an academic and service-learning safari. The itinerary includes one week at Stony Brook University campus with an intensive classroom introduction to the history, culture, environment and Kiswahili (the national language of Tanzania), followed by three weeks “in country” at four different locations. This latter portion of the schedule will includes a four day safari to game parks including: Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti. A portion of the program focuses on health facilities and delivery systems in this developing country in addition to culture and environment.
