Staying Safe on Campus

New York State University Police

Officers of the New York Sate University Police serve as the principle law enforcement and emergency response agency at 28 SUNY campuses. Approximately 600 University Police officers are employed throughout the state with 21 stationed at SUNY cortland. 

All New York State University Police are duly appointed police officers trained to the highest standards in law enforcement, crisis intervention, first aid and other areas of emergency response. 

The University Police Department can be found in Whitaker Hall. 

General Safety Information

  • Always trust your instincts. 
  • Walk in well-lit and populated areas. 
  • Report suspicious activity by calling 911 or using a blue light phone. 
  • Enter and ICE (In Case of Emergency) contact in your cell phone. 
  • Watch out for your friends and neighbors. 
  • Keep an eye on campus crime alerts and patterns via the UPD website. 
  • Learn to protect yourself with a UPD self-defense course. 

Building Safety

  • Notify the Residence Hall Director or facilities staff when exterior lights are not working. 
  • Use the peephole on your residence door. 
  • If the lobby exterior door is supposed to be locked, help keep it locked. Never prop this door open. If the door is propped open, unprop it. 
  • Be sure all first-floor windows can be closed and locked. Secure them when you leave or when you are sleeping. 
  • When leaving your room, even for a short time, lock all windows and doors and turn off all heat-producing appliances. 
  • Never let strangers into your building, even if they look like a student. 

Fire Safety

  • Note emergency exists when entering a new building. 
  • Always heed the fire alarm even if you think it may be a drill. 
  • Don't use appliances that are not allowed in residence halls. 
  • The use of candles is prohibited in all campus residence halls. 
  • Don't drape fabric over laps; this can start fires. 
  • Don't tamper with fire equipment such as extinguishers and smoke detectors. 
  • Memorize where alarm stations are so you can get to them quickly. 

In case of fire:

  • Crawl to stay beneath the smoke. 
  • Test doorknobs to see if they are hot before opening a door. 
  • When leaving an area, close all doors to slow the spread of the fire. 

A Night Out

  • Never leave your drink unattended at a party or bar. 
  • Never drink from common sources like punch bowls. 
  • Never accept drinks from strangers. 
  • Never set keys, wallets, purses or phones down or leave them unattended. 
  • If you go somewhere with friends, make sure everyone is accounted for before leaving. 
  • Make sure you know a safe route back to your room or apartment. 
  • Never drink and drive. 
  • Do not mix alcohol and drugs; this can have dangerous and unpredictable effects. 
  • Use marked crosswalks, look both ways and make sure traffic stops before your cross. 

Protecting Valuables

  • Keep a list of your valuables with descriptions and serial numbers. 
  • Engrave valuables with an ID number so authorities will be able to identify that they are yours. 
  • When locking a bike, lock it through both wheels and the frame. 
  • Register your bike with the police. 
  • Put valuables int he trunk of the car rather than the passenger area so they can't be seen. 
  • Try to park in more populated areas. 
  • Carry insurance on your valuables.
