Henry Steck

Henry Steck, Political Science Department and Project on Eastern and Central Europe, recently presented a paper titled “Squeezing Liberal Democracy: Recent Developments in the United States,” at the 22nd annual conference held at the Centre for Advanced Academic Studies of the University of Zagreb in Dubrovnik, Croatia. He also delivered “‘There is No Santa Claus’: Confronting the Challenges of Educating Students for the Real World of Modern Democracy” at a conference on “Cha(lle)nging (sic) Democracy at the Beginning of the 21st Century.” The conference was held at Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj, Romania.

Laura Davies

Laura Davies, English Department, had her chapter, “Plagiarism and the Internet: Fears, Facts, and Pedagogies,” published in The Handbook for Academic Integrity. The chapter was co-authored with Rebecca Moore Howard, Syracuse University. The Handbook for Academic Integrity, published by Springer, is international and interdisciplinary in its scope.

Mary Schlarb and Shufang Strause

Mary Schlarb, International Programs, Shufang Strause, Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department, and Dennis Weng, former Political Science Department faculty member, contributed a chapter titled “The New Normal: Student and Faculty Mobility Programs between Public Teacher Education Institutions in China and the U.S.” to The Rise of China-U.S. International Cooperation in Higher Education (Spotlight on China), Christopher Johnstone and Li Li Ji, editors.

Annette Ernste, Jeremy Pekarek and Jenifer Phelan

Annette Ernste, Jeremy Pekarek and Jenifer Phelan, library, presented June 14 at the 2019 State University of New York Librarian Association (SUNYLA) Conference held at Onondaga Community College. Their presentation on Information Literacy instruction to freshmen was titled “Zombie Escape: Gamifying Library Instruction with Active Learning Activities.” This session explored why active learning is a powerful tool for engaging students in developing their knowledge practices and dispositions for a deeper understanding of the threshold concepts outlined in the Association of College and Research Libraries Information Literacy Framework.

Robert J. Spitzer

Robert J. Spitzer, Distinguished Service Professor political science emeritus and author, was featured in WalletHub’s recent article titled “Cities with the Biggest Homicide Rate Problems,” written by Adam McCann and published April 26.

George R. Dugan

George R. Dugan, professor emeritus of art and art history, recently concluded a month-long exhibition of 40 paintings at the Windsor Whips Art Gallery in Windsor, N.Y. Dugan is a visiting professor of art at Binghamton University. This summer, he will serve as the director of art, conducting an eight-week course of study for the 11th year in Dingle, Ireland. The course is offered in conjunction with SUNY Cortland’s Study Abroad Program through the International Programs Office at SUNY Cortland.

Brian Williams

Brian Williams, Political Science Department, guested edited and wrote an introduction for a recently published special issue of Theory in Action, focusing on the topic of anarchism and democracy. 

 

Bonni C. Hodges

Bonni C. Hodges, Health Department, was a participant in the Assembly on Health Equity and Prosperity held Aug. 4-5. Hosted by the University of Maryland’s Center for Health Equity and funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the assembly brought practitioners, academics, business leaders, and government officials together to build skills and capabilities to empower local actions to improve health equity and prosperity.

Helena Baert

Jeremy Jimenez

Jeremy Jimenez, Foundations and Social Advocacy Department, presented findings from his collaboration with Egyptian educators in an online historical thinking course at the Comparative International Education Society conference in Mexico City, Mexico.
