Tadayuki Suzuki, Literacy Department, presented “Being Born in the Wrong Gender: Thinking about the Availability of Current Transgender Children’s Books,” at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) annual convention, held Nov. 18 in St. Louis, Mo.

Robert Spitzer

Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, gave a talk titled, “Gun Laws, History, and the Second Amendment: What Does the Constitution Allow?” on April 17 at Clemson University, South Carolina. He also spoke to a political science class on the relationship between federalism and the gun debate. 

Wylie Schwartz

Wylie Schwartz, Art and Art History Department, had her article titled “Between Empathy and Antagonism: Subjective Imagination in the Situationist Drakabygget” published in the current edition of the Oxford Art Journal.  

Kristine Newhall

Kristine Newhall, Kinesiology Department, had her article "Look at me! I can change your tire": Queer Female Masculinity in the Gym, published in the most recent issue of the Journal of Bodies, Sexualities, and Masculinities.  

Vierne Placide

Vierne Placide, Health Department, presented a poster titled “Factors Influencing Counseling Adherence in Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder” at AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting held June 2 to 4 in Washington, D.C.

Jeremy Jimenez

Jeremy Jimenez, Foundations and Social Advocacy Department, presented a paper titled “Portrayal of Religion Against the Backdrop of Progress and Modernity in the US and Canadian Social Science Textbooks from 1850 to 2010” at the Future of World Society conference at Pomona College, Los Angeles. 

Mechthild Nagel

Mechthild Nagel, Philosophy and Africana Studies departments and Center for Gender and Intercultural Studies, had her article, “Gender and the Law,” published in the current issue of Journal of Research in Gender Studies. The article is based on a keynote that she gave in Bucharest for a gender conference last spring, which was chaired by the journal’s editor, Ramona Mihaila.

Carolyn Bershad

Carolyn Bershad, Counseling and Wellness Services, was a co-presenter at the annual conference of the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors (AUCCCD) on Oct. 16 in New Orleans. She, along with Peter LeViness, University of Richmond, and Kim Gorman, Western Carolina University, presented “Highlights from the AUCCCD 2017 Directors’ Survey.”

Alex Corbitt

Alex Corbitt, Literacy Department, had his article titled “Speculative F(r)ictions: A Youth Restorying Horror and Monstrosity” published in November in the Journal of Literacy Research.

Tom Lickona

Tom Lickona, Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department, has been awarded a $10,000 contract with the Kansas State Board of Education for the “Character Education Partnership Grant.” The period of performance is Feb. 21 to June 30, 2011.
