It is part of a symposium issue on “Contending With the Complexity of the Gun Violence Debate in the United States.”

Claus Schubert, Mathematics Department, was informed that his paper was accepted for publication in the Israel Journal of Mathematics. “Semiorderings and Stability Index Under Field Extensions” was co-authored with Karim Becher, Universiteit Antwerpen, Belgium, and David Leep, University of Kentucky.
Edward Caffarella
Edward Caffarella, Educational Leadership Department, was at the University of Malaya in Malaysia from April 24 through May 26 on a Fulbright Specialist project grant aimed at raising education standards in Malaysia. While there, he made several formal presentations, including: “Evaluation Research: Conducting Program Evaluation” for faculty and students at the University Malaya; “Leadership Development” a headmasters training session; “Leadership in Higher Education: Moving Beyond Management and Administration” for University of Malaya senior administrators; “Planning for Change in Schools” for MARA Junior College principals and senior administrators; “Accreditation of Teacher Education Programs in the USA for University Utara Malaysia education faculty; “Ethics in Research,” a presentation for faculty and students at the University Utara Malaysia; and “Teachers Traits and Characteristics - American Perspectives,” a national seminar on Malaysian Teachers Competency and Performance Indicators.
Amanda Anderson
Amanda Anderson, residence hall director for Smith Tower, participated in the Association of College and Personnel Administrators (ACPA) Conference held March 26-30 in Baltimore, Md. Anderson is a member of the Commission for Career Development and has submitted a piece for their newsletter about her experience at ACPA. She applied to join the Career Central at Convention (C3) Care Team for the 2012 ACPA convention in Louisville, Ky.
Jean W. LeLoup
Jean W. LeLoup, international communications and cultures emerita, received the Anthony J. Paplia Award for the outstanding article in a state or national foreign language education publication for her article “The effectiveness of Courses Abroad as a Professional Development Model for Foreign Language Teachers.” The New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers presented the award at their annual meeting in late October.
Juan Diego Prieto
Juan Diego Prieto, Political Science Department, presented at the SUNY Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice in the Curriculum Conference: Building a Community of Practice conference, held Nov. 3 and 4 at the University at Albany. His presentation was titled “From Family and Community to the Global (and Back Again): A Writing Assignment on Lived Experiences of Political Economy.”
Mary Schlarb
Mary Schlarb, International Programs Office, served on a panel for an Association of International Education Administrators virtual town hall meeting on Sept. 10 titled “Reestablishing Study Abroad: What SIOs [Senior International Officers] Need to Do.” She was joined by colleagues Helen Gaudette, from the Fashion Institute of Technology, SUNY, Nick Gozik from Boston College and Eny di Iorio and Ambra Balzani from Italy’s Lorenzo de' Medici Institute.

Emily Quinlan, Advisement and Transition, presented “Transforming the Transfer Student Experience: A Fluid and Dynamic Approach to Advocacy, Support and Services” at the New York State Transfer and Articulation Association (NYSTAA) conference, held May 22-24 in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Nikolay Karkov
Nikolay Karkov, Philosophy Department, co-authored an article titled “Rethinking East-European Socialism: Notes Toward an Anti-Capitalist Decolonial Methodology,” recently published in Interventions: International Journal of Postcolonial Studies. The text makes a contribution to both anti-capitalist and decolonial critique from the perspective of the historical legacy of East-European socialism, by offering a genealogy of critical theory in the region after the Cold War, critically discussing socialist humanism's colonial origins, and also exploring South-to-East collaborations between the former Third and Second Worlds. The authors conclude that East-European socialism’s efforts to organize alternative and resistant modernities at times converged and at others starkly departed from capitalist colonial modernity.
