SUNY Cortland automatically considers students for financial awards in addition to the university’s merit scholarships. These include:
- SUNY Cortland Future New Yorker Grant
- SUNY Cortland International Student Grant
- SUNY Cortland Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship
- AmeriCorps School of Service Award
SUNY Cortland Future New Yorker Grant
Totaling up to $7,500 for the full academic year, this award provides financial support for students who reside outside of New York state. It is renewable annually when students maintain full-time enrollment and non-New York state residency. Additionally, students must achieve a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average.
To receive this award, students must:
- be admitted to SUNY Cortland as a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student
- be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
- be a non-New York state resident who does not qualify for in-state tuition
- not participate in a graduate assistantship
- remain in good academic standing
To automatically renew their award, students must:
- maintain full-time enrollment
- be a non-New York state resident who does not qualify for in-state tuition
- earn a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average
- be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
- not participate in a graduate assistantship
- maintain satisfactory academic progress per the university’s published Federal Good Academic Standing guidelines
SUNY Tuition Match
SUNY Cortland participates in the State University of New York's tuition matching program for select undergraduate students through the university's Future New Yorker Grant detailed above.
The university matches in-state tuition for flagship campuses from eight states, with an annual award not to exceed $7,500 in total. Learn more about SUNY Tuition Match.
SUNY Cortland International Student Grant
This award is available to matriculated international undergraduate and graduate students attending SUNY Cortland. It provides financial support to ease tuition costs and no application is required.
Undergraduate Award Amounts
Matriculated, full-time international undergraduate students will receive up to $3,750 per semester (up to $7,500 per academic year).
Graduate Award Amounts
Matriculated international graduate students will receive $3,750 per semester for full-time enrollment (12 credit hours per semester). Students enrolled in less than 12 credits hours will receive a pro-rated amount.
To receive a grant, a student must:
- be admitted to SUNY Cortland as a degree-seeking international undergraduate or graduate student
- not participate in a graduate assistantship (graduate assistants are not eligible for this award
SUNY Cortland Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship
The SUNY Cortland Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship was established to recognize outstanding students transferring into SUNY Cortland who have been inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. It is worth $500 per semester ($1,000 per academic year). Availability and renewal is based on funding.
To earn this scholarship, students must:
- be a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for transfer students
- enroll at SUNY Cortland with junior-level status
- demonstrate high academic achievement (minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA)
- notify the Admissions Office of their membership in Phi Theta Kappa
To renew this scholarship, students must:
- maintain full-time enrollment
- remain matriculated at SUNY Cortland
- earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher
- maintain satisfactory academic progress per the university’s published Federal Good Academic Standing guidelines
- this scholarship is renewable for a maximum of four academic years (eight academic semesters excluding summer semesters). The actual number of terms is based on class level (first-year, sophomore, etc.) at the time of the initial award.

AmeriCorps School of Service Award
SUNY Cortland is proud to join this SUNY-wide initiative to assist students who have served in AmeriCorps.
Prospective students who have worked through the national service program may be eligible for the following benefits, in addition to the federally funded program’s AmeriCorps Educational Award:
- One of two $1,000 institutional scholarships
- Priority admission at SUNY Cortland
- A one-year enrollment deferral
