The Physical Education Department offers a variety of physical activity opportunities for children and adults with disabilities. All programs begin the third week in September. Registration is required, so call early as some programs have limited enrollments.
All programs are held in the Park Center at SUNY Cortland. Programs are staffed by students majoring in physical education and supervised by adapted physical education faculty.
Tuesday Night Skill Builders and Challenger Sports Program
6-8 p.m.
Skill Builders, which runs from 6-7 p.m., is designed for toddlers and preschoolers, ages 2-5 years, identified with developmental delays who enjoy participating in small group, play-based activity.
The Challenger Sports Program, which runs from 7-8 p.m., is designed for children ages 6-15 years, who are interested in improving sport specific skills necessary to be successful in local youth sports programs.

BOCES – Adapted PE Program
12:45-1:50 p.m. Monday and Friday only
School aged children participating in BOCES programs may take part in gym and swim activities. The class is taught by adapted physical education students and bus transportation to the SUNY Cortland campus is provided. For more information, please contact Cathy MacDonald at 607-753-4991.
CHAMP
CHAMP – Cortland Homer Afterschool Mentorship Program: The CHAMP program is for ages 5-12 and is housed at the JM McDonald Sports Complex. The afterschool program runs from 3:45-6 p.m. daily and begins the first week of public school.
This program is staffed by two graduate assistants in physical education and undergraduate students majoring in physical education. Children receive homework help, a healthy “snack attack” and physical activity to include ice skating. All ability levels are welcome to participate. Children with disabilities are encouraged to participate. This is a fee-based program.

SIMS Exploration Center
The Sensory Integration & Motor Sensory (SIMS) Exploration Center provides cross- disciplinary sensory integration training and research opportunities to faculty, community members, and students in Physical Education, Exercise Science, Communication Disorders and Sciences, Early Childhood Education, Special Education, Therapeutic Recreation and related areas. Thursday Night Wheelchair Sports
7-9 p.m.
This activity is open to anyone who would benefit from or is interested in participation in wheelchair sports. These sports include wheelchair basketball, softball, power soccer, football and more. For more information, contact Tim Davis at 607-753-4969.
Ready, Sweat, Go!
6-7 p.m. Wednesdays
Adults with disabilities participate in one-on-one physical fitness training to meet their individual needs. Each participant takes part in an individualized program that may include strength training, walking, and/or yoga. For more information contact Cathy MacDonald at 607-753-4991.
Cortland Stars - Special Olympics
6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesdays
The Cortland Stars are a group of motivated students who provide opportunities to athletes with developmental disabilities of all skill levels in various sports! Our athletes are 8 years old and up.
