A Sandwich Seminar titled “What You Should Know about Hydrofracking” will examine the process of natural gas extraction from shale being proposed for this region of the country. The talk will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27, in Brockway Hall Jacobus Lounge and is free and open to the public.

The New York State Department of Education (NYSED) recently awarded almost $1 million to health educators at SUNY Cortland to provide school district health offices across the state with the tools and training needed to help their students live healthier lives and enjoy more academic success.

Cortland County residents and organizations are encouraged to participate in the Second Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service scheduled for Monday, Jan. 18. The daylong event, commemorating the ideals and the civic spirit of the late civil rights leader, is sponsored by the SUNY Cortland Institute for Civic Engagement, the YWCA of Cortland, Habitat for Humanity and Northwoods Rehabilitation and Extended Care Center.

Stephanie Plude of Cortland, N.Y., has been named Main Street community outreach coordinator. She will assist town-gown partnerships based at Main Street SUNY Cortland at 9 Main St.

For a fourth consecutive year, SUNY Cortland was ranked by Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine among its 100 Best Values in Public Colleges, a list of national institutions that combine “outstanding economic value with top-notch education.”

SUNY Cortland alumnus John Fantauzzi ’58, a retired social studies teacher now living in Cape Coral, Fla., will bequest $5.18 million — the largest individual gift in the College’s 140-year history — to support a scholarship he established in 1990 for children of immigrants and first-generation college students attending SUNY Cortland.

Jack Sheltmire, who has directed the Center for Environmental and Outdoor Education at SUNY Cortland since 2000, will retire on June 30, 2010. He will be designated director emeritus of the center for environmental and outdoor education.

The sculpture exhibition "Brockway Road Pour" will run through Dec. 31 in the Beard Building Gallery at Main Street SUNY Cortland, 9 Main St. Open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, the exhibition is free and open to the public.

Sheila Gregoire, a secretary II in the Dean of the School of Education Office since 2003, was named the recipient of the prestigious 2009 President's Award for Excellence in Classified Service. SUNY Cortland President Erik J. Bitterbaum presented Gregoire with the award on Dec. 4 at the 40th Annual Service Recognition Ceremony, sponsored by the SUNY Cortland Human Resources Office, in the Corey Union Function Room.

About 700 students, faculty and staff members raised more than $39,000 for the American Cancer Society in the fifth annual SUNY Cortland Relay For Life on Nov. 21, at the College's Lusk Field House.
