Gov. David A. Paterson today announced that the New York Jets will hold their 2009 Training Camp at the campus of SUNY Cortland generating millions in economic activity for Central New York and drawing thousands of people to Cortland this summer. Gov. Paterson made the announcement in SUNY Cortland’s historic Hall of Fame Room where he was joined by New York Jets Owner Woody Johnson and SUNY Cortland President Erik Bitterbaum, as well as business leaders, and State and local elected officials.

The Performing Arts Department will present the Choral Union in its spring concert on Tuesday, May 5, at 8 p.m. in the Dowd Fine Arts Theatre. The concert is free and open to the public. The program features a concert of music for the stage and will include selections from operas and a musical play.

Joel Kovel, a controversial author, activist and faculty member at Bard College, will deliver one of three planned lectures at SUNY Cortland during "Earth Week: What on Earth is a Green Economy?" from April 21-24. Organized by the campus organization Cortland Students Advocating a Valuable Environment (CSAVE), the presentations all begin at 7:30 p.m. and are free and open to the public.

Well-known poet, journalist and activist Irakli Kakabadze and his wife Anna Dolidze, a human rights lawyer, both from the Republic of Georgia, will be screening their documentary, "At the Top of My Voice," on Monday, April 20 at SUNY Cortland. The film, which is free and open to the public, will be shown at 7 p.m. in Old Main Brown Auditorium.

Area teachers, teaching assistants, school administrators and College faculty will entertain their colleagues and celebrate teaching with a variety show featuring music, humor and reflections on Wednesday, May 6, at SUNY Cortland. The 20th annual "Celebration of Teaching: A Cabaret Evening of Entertainment" will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a dessert buffet and social gathering in Corey Union Function Room.

Popular recording artist Matt Nathanson will perform during the SUNY Cortland Student Activities Board's fifth annual "Rock for a Cause" on Tuesday, April 28. The performance, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Corey Union Function Room, benefits the V-Day UNICEF joint campaign, called "Stop Raping Our Greatest Resource: Power to Women and Girls of the Democratic Republic of the Congo." V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. The 37 Project, a SUNY Cortland student band, and David Smallen will open for Nathanson.

Timothy Davis, an assistant professor of physical education at SUNY Cortland, has been named the College's eighth recipient of the Dr. Rozanne Brooks Dedicated Teacher Award. He will be formally recognized on Thursday, May 7, during the College's annual Professional and Faculty Awards Ceremony. The Brooks Award honors a faculty member who devotes a significant amount of time both to teaching and to working with students outside of class.

More than 850 Central New York college students and 100 school district recruiters from New York and other states are expected to attend the 24th annual Central New York Teacher Recruitment Days on April 23-24 at SUNY Cortland. Hosted by SUNY Cortland for the last 24 years, the event is organized through the College's Career Services and co-sponsored by the Central New York Teacher Recruitment Days Consortium, which represents the career services offices of 16 area public and private colleges and universities

Four SUNY Cortland seniors were honored on April 7 in Albany, N.Y., with 2009 State University of New York Chancellor's Awards for Student Excellence. SUNY Vice Chancellor and Officer-In Charge John J. O'Connor recognized 238 students from the 64 campuses throughout the state during the ceremony at the Empire State Convention Center. The recipients were honored for integrating academic excellence with accomplishments in leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts or career achievement. This year's honorees have an overall grade point average of 3.77.
