SUNY Cortland strives to maintain an inclusive campus community and educate students about broader societal issues in positive, meaningful ways.
However, as a public university, SUNY Cortland avoids taking political positions or making broad institutional statements, especially when a social issue or recent news event is not directly related to the university’s mission. While these types of statements can be well-intentioned, they can detract from our educational mission by alienating members of the larger SUNY Cortland community who hold opposing views.
The university recognizes the importance of academic freedom and the value of introducing campus community members to a variety of ideas and perspectives. When SUNY Cortland’s leadership weighs in on a divisive issue, it can discourage dissenting opinions and fracture the campus community. Different viewpoints can and should be explored as a way to understand different backgrounds, build critical thinking skills and educate others.
On those rare occasions when a larger public concern directly impacts the safety or well-being of the campus community, SUNY Cortland may issue a statement that attempts to communicate crucial information. Students, faculty and staff members are encouraged to consider participating in educational lectures, events led by student organizations or the work of the university’s Institute for Civic Engagement — opportunities that promote constructive dialogue and action.
Make no mistake: SUNY Cortland is no place for hate, injustice or violence. With or without an institutional statement on a given topic, the university remains committed to its educational mission and protecting a safe, inclusive community for all.
