3-Court Gymnasium

This gymnasium has three (3) courts, which is used for open recreation and scheduled intramural sport contests. Open recreation activities such as basketball, volleyball, badminton and pickleball can be played here. Volleyball and  badminton/pickleball nets and standards can be setup upon request. The courts can be partitioned if necessary.

3-Court Gymnasium Rules

  • The following activities have priority on the following courts during the academic year:
    • Court #1 - Basketball
    • Court #2 - Volleyball
    • Court #3 - Pickleball/Badminton after 8:00 p.m. Monday - Friday; Badminton from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday - Friday
    • No other activities may take place while the prioritized activity is being played.
  • Appropriate footwear must be worn at all times.
    • This includes clean/dry athletic sneakers (no open footwear, bare/socked feet or boots).
  • Dunking or grabbing/pulling the rim is prohibited.
  • No throwing of equipment, including balls, against the walls or glass.
  • No fitness equipment may be brought in from any other areas of the Student Life Center.
  • Use of lacrosse balls, baseballs/softballs and soccer balls are not allowed.
  • Personal sound systems are prohibited.
  • Campus Recreation staff are the only authorized personnel that may move goals.

3-Lane Track

The 3-Lane Track is open during all recreational hours. The track has lanes designed for walking, jogging and/or running. Patrons must follow the running direction displayed at each entrance of the track. Five (5) laps is equivalent to one (1) mile.

3-Lane Track Rules: 

  • Running/jogging and walking are the only authorized activities on the track.
    • Running/jogging is allowed on the outermost lane.
    • Walking is allowed on the inside and middle lane.
  • Appropriate footwear must be worn at all times.
    • This includes clean/dry athletic sneakers (no open footwear, bare/socked feet, spikes or boots).
  • No organized team practices.
  • No accessories or equipment are to be used on the track.
  • Using the railing as a stretching aid is prohibited.
  • Be aware of other users; do not block lane access.
  • No loitering or spectating on the track.
  • No strollers on the track.

Cardio Area

With over 70 pieces of equipment and 3,400 square feet, the cardio training area serves as an entrance to the suspended track which encircles the Student Life Center. This area is equipped with a variety of treadmills, elliptical fitness cross-trainers (which have personal viewing screens with TV and Internet), Expresso & Peloton virtual bicycles, step machines, Concept II Rowers, Jacob's Ladders, an upper body arm cycle, and more.

Cardio Area Rules

  • Participants must be a minimum of eleven (11) years of age to use the Cardio Area, unless equipment lists a specific minimum age that is older than 11.
  • The Cardio Area operates under the open recreation concept.
    • No team/group workouts or individuals/groups dominating any area of the facility or piece of equipment.
    • Participants are expected to move from station to station at a reasonable rate.
  • Disinfectant spray and towels are stationed in this area. Please clean your machine after use.
    • Do not spray disinfectant directly on to console and/or electronic components.
  • In order to maintain a safe and sanitary environment, it is recommended that everyone have a towel in their possession at all times.
  • Appropriate fitness attire must be worn at all times.
    • This includes athletic sneakers (no open footwear, bare/socked feet or boots).
    • No non-athletic apparel or apparel that may damage equipment.
  • Chalk use in the Cardio Area is prohibited.
  • Locker rooms must be used to change clothing.
  • Participants must follow all posted instructions for proper equipment use, according to the manufacturer's intended purpose.
    • If you are unsure of how to use equipment, ask a Campus Recreation staff member.
  • Participants must return all equipment to its proper place after use and report malfunctioning/broken equipment to the staff.

Circuit/Free Weight Area

This 9,000 square-foot space is located on the first floor of the Student Life Center. You can find a machine to work any part of the body. The space is separated between a selectorized machine area and a free-weight area which includes dumbbells, squat racks, plate-loaded machines, Olympic benches and a stretching area.

  • Participants must be eleven (11) years of age to use the Circuit/Free Weight Area, unless equipment lists a specific minimum age that is older than 11.
  • The Circuit/Free Weight Area operates under the open recreation concept.
    • No team/group workouts or individuals/groups dominating any area of the facility or piece of equipment.
    • Participants are expected to move from station to station at a reasonable rate.
  • Disinfectant spray and towels are stationed in this area. Please clean your machine after use.
    • Do not spray disinfectant directly on to console and/or electronic components.
  • All weights, dumbbells, bars, and accessories must be re-racked after each use.
  • In order to maintain a safe and sanitary environment, it is recommended that everyone have a towel in their possession at all times.
  • Appropriate fitness attire must be worn at all times.
    • This includes athletic sneakers (no open footwear, bare/socked feet or boots).
    • No non-athletic apparel or apparel that may damage equipment.
  • When using chalk:
    • Please “chalk up” and "clap" your hands inside the chamber.
    • Remove hands from chamber.
    • Avoid clapping hands together outside of chamber.
  • Locker rooms must be used to change clothing.
  • The dropping of weights (heavy lifting) may only occur with use of bumper plates and on lifting platforms.
  • Participants must follow all posted instructions for proper equipment use, according to the manufacturer's intended purpose.
    • If you are unsure of how to use equipment, ask a Campus Recreation staff member.
  • Participants must return all equipment to its proper place after use and report malfunctioning/broken equipment to the staff.

Climbing/Bouldering Wall

No matter what your experience, the SUNY Cortland climbing gym has something for everyone. Our gym consists of a 42-foot roped climbing area with eight top ropes, three lead climbing routes, an auto belay system and a 13-foot bouldering wall. We offer basic and advanced clinics as well as competitions throughout the year. Stop in today for an orientation to begin climbing!

Combatives Room

This room is equipped with mirrors, kettlebells, dumbbells, physioballs, medicine balls, bosu balls, and a speed bag. Patrons can utilize this space for ab work, circuit training or to escape for a more quiet and secluded workout. 

Combatives Room Rules: 

  • No dropping or slamming of any equipment.
  • No equipment is to be brought into or out of the Combatives Room.
  • Disinfectant spray and towels are stationed in this area. Please clean your equipment after use.
    • Do not spray disinfectant directly on to console and/or electronic components.
  • Appropriate fitness attire must be worn at all times.
    • This includes athletic sneakers (no open footwear, bare/socked feet or boots).

Equipment Checkout

Equipment Checkout allows patrons to check out a variety of recreational and sporting equipment. Most equipment may be checked out at no charge. Equipment and rental prices are listed below.

Equipment Checkout Rules

  • All participants must present a valid SUNY Cortland ID card or Student Life Center membership card for checkout and rental privileges.
  • ID must be presented when checking out/renting equipment and also when returning equipment.
  • Participants are responsible for repair and replacement costs of equipment damaged while in their use.
  • Participants will be subject to late charges for equipment that is not returned by 11:59 p.m. the same day of checkout or rental.
  • Participants must “check in” towels and jerseys before placing them down the laundry chute.

Locker/Towel Service

Locker and towel service are also available through Equipment Checkout. Lockers can be rented by semester or full-year. A Men's, Women's and Family Locker Room are available in the Student Life Center. Rented lockers include towel service. Towels may be picked up at Equipment Checkout.

Day-Use lockers are available on a first-come/first-serve basis. Patrons must provide their own lock and lockers must be emptied each night. Day-Use lockers are labeled in the Men's, Women's and Family Locker Room.

Fitness Assessment Room

This room is used for Personal Trainers to meet with clients and perform pre- and post-fitness assessments. Using data gathered from the fitness assessment session, trainers are able to use this information to design personalized workout plans for their clients. With access to the Bod Pod, trainers are able to measure a client's lean muscle mass and body fat percentage with a high degree of accuracy. This allows trainers to develop a baseline for clients as they start their journey to achieving their fitness/wellness goals.

Functional Training Room

Not to be confused with Cross-Fit, the Functional Training Room is designed for Cross Training, which encompasses Olympic lifting, gymnastics and metabolic conditioning to improve fitness and performance. All are welcome to use the space and equipment which includes weighted tires, sand bags, Bulgarian bags, TRX Suspension Trainers, a resistance arm rope, monkey bars, battling ropes, and more. Members of the Student Life Center have unlimited resources in this room to help improve functionality in everyday movements!

Functional Training Room Rules: 

  • Participants must be eleven (11) years of age to use the Functional Training Room and its equipment unless equipment lists a specific minimum age that is older than 11.
  • Dropping or slamming of any equipment must be done on the lifting platform.
  • No equipment is to be brought into or out of the Functional Training Room.
  • Wall-ball and other exercises (i.e. handstands) must be done on designated reinforced wall on the east end.
  • Tires must be flipped on the south end of the room, closest to 3-Court Gym.
  • Disinfectant spray and towels are stationed in this area. Please clean your equipment after use.
    • Do not spray disinfectant directly on to console and/or electronic components.
  • Appropriate fitness attire must be worn at all times.
    • This includes athletic sneakers (no open footwear, bare/socked feet or boots).
    • No non-athletic apparel or apparel that may damage equipment.
  • Participants must use equipment according to the manufacturer's intended purpose.

Game Room

The Game Room is the ultimate social/play area equipped with:

  • two (2) Wii, X-Box, and PlayStation stations
  • billiard tables
  • air hockey tables
  • a dome hockey unit
  • a foosball table
  • electronic basketball units
  • Skee-Ball machines
  • dart boards

Everything is free of charge to use with a valid Cortland ID, except for table tennis balls, which are $1.00 each. The gaming systems can be used for as long as you want unless there is a wait list in which you would be limited to a two-hour time frame.

Game Room Rules:

The Student Life Center features two (2) Golf Simulators which offers most of the major courses in the country. This is a great addition to our program where people can play 9 or 18 holes, have a golf swing analysis, and play games. Patrons may play on a "first come/first served" basis.

Group Exercise Room

Located off the track and overlooking the pool, the Group Exercise Room houses our Group Exercise program. Students, faculty/staff and members of the Student Life Center may purchase a membership to the program and participate in a wide variety of classes including: Zumba, indoor cycling, circuit training, box & burn and more.

Group Exercise Room Rules:

  • The use of this room is for group exercise classes only. The combatives room is available for personal use.
  • All Group Exercise participants must purchase Group Exercise Memberships or day passes to participate in classes.
  • All members must have their ID cards and present them to the instructor to be swiped each time they attend classes.
  • The Group Fitness instructor has the right to ask any participant to leave class if they are exhibiting inappropriate or disrespectful behavior or behavior that places themselves and others at risk of harm.
  • Appropriate fitness attire must be worn at all times.
    • This includes athletic sneakers (no open footwear, bare/socked feet or boots).
    • No non-athletic apparel or apparel that may damage equipment.

The Massage Therapy Room is available based on appointments with the massage therapist on staff. We offer a variety of different massages from a 15-minute chair massage to a 50-minute Sport or Relaxation Massage.

Mind body room

Are you interested in learning how to relax and to fully tune into your mind and body? Come check out the Mind/Body Room which has a unique lighting system that mimics the constellation and can be adjusted to control the ambiance in the room. Different class types of Yoga including Vinyasa, Power Yoga, Gentle Yoga and meditation classes are offered to students and faculty/staff who are members of the Mind/Body Program.

Multi-Activity Court

The Multi-Activity Court (MAC) has a poured, rubberized floor that allows for a variety of activities to take place here. It is available at all times for open recreation activities such as basketball, soccer, and floor hockey. This area may be offline due to Campus Recreation Sport Club practices, Intramural Sport indoor events/leagues as well as potential special events.

Multi-Activity Court Rules: 

  • Intramural activities and scheduled club practices have priority use.
  • Appropriate footwear must be worn at all times.
    • This includes athletic sneakers (no open footwear, bare/socked feet or boots).
  • Patrons are responsible for replacement costs for equipment that gets stuck in the rafters.
  • Only indoor soccer balls rented from Equipment Checkout can be used.
  • No equipment can be brought in from other areas.
  • Use of lacrosse balls, baseballs/softballs and soccer balls are not allowed.
  • Dunking or grabbing/pulling the rim is prohibited.
  • Personal sound systems are prohibited.
  • Campus Recreation staff are the only authorized personnel that may move goals.
  • Roller blades are not allowed on the court.

Pool/Hot Tub

The Student Life Center Pool offers a wide variety of activities within our 5,000 sq-foot facility. The pool has six lanes for lap swimming, a 25-person hot tub, a resistance walk and a recreation area for water activities including basketball.

Assumption of Risk

Participants are deemed to have knowledge of and assume inherent risks of spa/pool and informal recreation activities. These Inherent risks include, but are not limited to:

  • Injuries resulting from collisions/contact with other individuals/equipment in the pool or surrounding areas,
  • Injuries resulting from falls,
  • Injuries resulting from ingestion of water.

    Pool/Hot Tub Rules:

    • Participants will cooperate with all Lifeguards and Campus Recreation Staff.
      • Lifeguards and Campus Recreation staff have the right to ask any participant to leave class if they are exhibiting inappropriate or disrespectful behavior or behavior that places themselves and others at risk of harm.
      • No prolonged conversing with lifeguards; guards need their full attention on the swim area.
    • Participants must take a full soap shower before entering the pool/spa.
    • Do not use while under the influence of alcohol, anticoagulants, antihistamines, vasoconstrictors, vasodilators, stimulants, hypnotics, narcotics or tranquilizers.
    • Participants must not urinate, defecate, spit or blow one’s nose in the pool/spa.
    • No prolonged underwater swimming or breath holding in pool and spa.
    • No shoes other than pool shoes allowed on the deck.
    • No personal belongings are allowed on the pool deck.
      • All personal items must be stored in a cubby or locker.
    • No diving or running allowed in any area of the pool/spa.
    • Glass and sharp objects are prohibited in the pool and spa area.
    • No food, gum or drink allowed, except water in plastic or metal re-sealable containers.
    • No outside equipment can be used in the pool.
    • Participants are responsible for damage and repair costs associated with reckless or negligent use of equipment and/or facilities.
    • The pool and/or spa may be closed for maintenance, health conditions, or any other reason deemed necessary by the Campus Recreation Staff or Facilities Operations and Services.
    • The pool and spa areas will be closed 30 minutes from the last strike/sound during a lightning/thunderstorm according to New York State Department of Health Code.
    • Help can be obtained by using the telephone and posted emergency telephone numbers for police, fire department, physician, ambulance and hospital.

    Spin Room

    Want to get a good workout in? The Spinning Room is the place to go. When you purchase your Group Exercise Program Membership, spinning classes are included! These classes are taught by certified Spin Instructors. There are 25 bikes in the facility, with an instructor's bike on a platform facing the class. Track your speed, mileage, and heart rate while you travel through beautiful beach scenery.

    Spin Room Rules

    • The use of this room is for indoor cycling classes only. There are spinning bikes located in the cardio area for personal use.
    • All Indoor Cycling participants must purchase Group Exercise Memberships or day passes to participate in classes.
    • All members must have their ID cards and present them to the instructor to be swiped each time they attend classes.
    • The Spin Room instructor has the right to ask any participant to leave class if they are exhibiting inappropriate or disrespectful behavior or behavior that places themselves and others at risk of harm.
    • A workout towel is required to partake in all indoor cycling classes.
      • Towels can be checked out for free at equipment checkout.
    • Water bottles are recommended for indoor cycling classes.
      • No food or beverages except for water in a metal or plastic re-sealable container.
    • Appropriate fitness attire must be worn at all times.
      • This includes athletic sneakers (no open footwear, bare/socked feet or boots).
      • No non-athletic apparel or apparel that may damage equipment.
    • Please report any malfunctioning bike parts to an instructor or Campus Recreation personnel.
