Am I permitted to leave papers out for students to pick up on their own? (Example: In a box by/in the office.)
No. FERPA does not permit the public disclosure of personally identifiable student information. Grades must be provided to students individually and securely. Because this scenario gives students the ability to review the grades and identifying information on the papers of others, this is a prohibited practice. Papers should be provided individually. Protected student data should not be in the open or unsupervised.
Grades are specifically listed as PII in Cortland's FERPA policies.
