Summer Session 2025 Dates

Summer Session includes multiple terms of varying lengths. The Summer Session terms and dates are:

Classes will not be held and assignments shall not be due on the following days in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 26; Juneteenth on Thursday, June 19; and Independence Day on Friday, July 4.

Please note: A slight change to the end date of Term C and the start date to Term D have been made. All dates are correct effective October 8, 2024.

SUNY Cortland students: register and pay for classes

As a SUNY Cortland student, you can begin registering for Summer Session when you register for your Fall 2025 courses during the Spring 2025 semester. Undergraduate students need to meet with their academic advisor to receive a PIN to register. Incoming transfer students are eligible to enroll in summer coursework through the Start Strong program.

Online registration will remain open through the first day of class for the session that the course is offered. Confirm Attendance and Pay Bill

Confirm your attendance and pay your tuition and fees online. Summer Session 2025 bills will be issued in mid-April.  Bills are tentatively due on Friday, May 2.

  • Summer Session 2025 tuition and fee rates will be available via Student Accounts in February 2025.
  • All students are billed electronically beginning in mid-April. You can view and pay your tuition and fees online through myRedDragon. The Student Accounts Office provides general billing and payment information.
  • Students who do not confirm their attendance will be deregistered.
  • Students must drop the course via myRedDragon if they are no longer attending the course and to avoid liability for the course.
  • Contact the Student Accounts Office with any billing or payment questions.

Non-SUNY Cortland students: register and pay for classes

Visiting student registration for Summer Session begins at 8 a.m. on Monday, April 7. Formal admission to SUNY Cortland is not required to take courses as a visiting student.

We welcome visiting students to take up to 30 credit hours of undergraduate coursework or 15 credit hours of graduate coursework on a part-time, non-degree basis at SUNY Cortland. These credit hour limitations include all study at SUNY Cortland, not just during one semester. Before exceeding these limits, you will need to apply for admission.

A brief overview of the registration steps is outlined below. For more detailed information, please visit the Visiting Student Information on the Registrar’s Office website.

  • Begin the process by completing the Visiting Student Form.
    • The information on this form will be used to establish you as a student at SUNY Cortland. If you have taken courses with us in the past, you will need to resubmit the form to access Summer Session registration. Please make sure to select "Summer" as the term that you plan to attend.
    • Within in 1 to 3 business days, you will receive an email with a username, password, and other important information. Once you have this information, you can register for your course.
  • Register for your course. Online registration through myRedDragon will be available until a few days before the start of each session. The Guidebook: Registration Instructions and Walk-through includes a detailed overview of how to register for your classes.
    • Registration via myRedDragon remains open through the first day of each term. Alternate Registration may be used if necessary for students experiencing errors with registering online.
    • Please note the important dates and deadlines below.

I am an incoming transfer student. Can I register for classes?

Incoming transfer students are eligible to enroll in summer coursework through the Start Strong program. Information will be sent to all incoming transfer students who have paid a deposit beginning in late-March or early-April.

Is financial aid available?

Details regarding Summer Session Eligibility is available through Financial Aid. Questions regarding Aid should be directed to the Financial Aid office. 

I am an Excelsior Scholarship recipient. If I take a Summer Session course, will it help me fulfill the requirement of completing 30 credit hours each year?

Credits earned during Summer (and Winter) Session can help you meet the Excelsior Scholarship requirements. Summer courses will apply to the academic/aid year prior to the summer term. We highly recommend consulting with your academic advisor and the Financial Aid Office before committing to a Summer Session course. Your advisor can help you choose the best course to fulfill your degree requirements. And, the Financial Aid Office will work with you to ensure that you are on track with this, and all other Excelsior Scholarship requirements.

How many credits can I take during Summer Session?

Undergraduate students may register for 7 credit hours in each Summer Session (I and II). Graduate students may register for 8 credit hours in each Summer Session (I and II). Term A and B courses count toward the credit total for Session I and Term C and D courses count toward the credit total for Session II.

Terms A, B, C, and D feature intensive 3-credit hour courses. You may only take one 3-credit hour course during each of these terms. You may, however, take an intensive course and a longer course at the same time. For example, you cannot take two 3-credit hour courses in Term A, but you may take a Term A course and a Session I course at the same time. 

Can I register for Summer Session I and II at the same time?

Yes. We encourage you to register for all Summer Session courses at the same time to secure seats in your desired courses. You can, however, register for a course up until the first day of the term in which the course falls, if seats are available.

If I decide not to complete a course, can I get a refund?

If you decide not to take a course before the term has started, students must drop the course through myRedDragon to not incur liability for the course.

After the term has started, you will need to drop or withdraw from the course. Visit the Registered Students and Withdrawals and Refunds pages (available in March 2025) for deadlines and more information, including links to the appropriate forms.

The date that you officially drop or withdraw will also impact your tuition liability and the potential for a refund. More information can also be found on the Student Accounts page.

Will taking a summer course allow me to improve my GPA?

If you are a matriculated SUNY Cortland student, Summer Session classes will be included in your cumulative GPA and on your transcript. However, no academic decisions from the Spring term will be changed for Fall because of a Summer Session grade. For example, if your GPA at the end of the Spring term was too low for student teaching, to get into a major, or go on an internship, a Summer course grade will not be reported and computed in time to change that decision.

What campus services are available during Summer Session?

Campus services are available during Summer Session, with reduced hours or availability. Details can be found on the Available Services page (available May 2025).

I have questions about a course. Whom should I contact?

You are welcome to contact the academic departments or schools with course-specific questions. If you are unsure of whom to contact, you can start with the Extended Learning Office or the Associate Dean's Office for the specific school.
