How many credits can a student take during Winter Session?
Students can register for a maximum of 5 credit hours during Winter Session. Associate Deans may approve a student for a credit overload of 6. Students will be directed to take at least one course in the 4-week term, but cannot take both courses in the 2-week term.

Students seeking to take coursework elsewhere via the permission to transfer process will still be subject to associate dean approval if credits exceed 5. When the student completes the permission to transfer process, Advisement and Transition will review their local schedule. However, given that students can register through the first day of the term, it is difficult to monitor if they were approved for permission to transfer, but had not yet enrolled in local coursework.

Regardless of credit hours, students should be advised of the condensed terms and the time commitment required to meet the course obligations.

Financial aid is not offered specifically for Winter Session.  However, Winter Session charges can be included in a SUNY Cortland student’s cost of attendance to allow for additional loan eligibility for the academic year.  Please contact the Financial Aid Office for more information.

Questions regarding billing, payments and refunds should be directed to Student Accounts at bursar@cortland.edu. Bills are issued beginning November 12. Payment for Winter Session 2025 is due on Friday, December 6.  Tuition and fee information for Winter Session is now available through Student Accounts. Students who do not confirm their attendance will be deregistered. Students who no longer intend to take the course must drop the course by the drop deadline to avoid liability.
